Event Production Manager-
Lighting Specialty

Job Summary

The Lux Productions is looking for an experienced Production Manager with a strong background in lighting.

Production Managers take assigned events from internal handoff through show completion. You’ll spend time in pre-production building the technical plan, coordinating equipment and labor, working through venue and logistical details, and making sure the event is ready before it leaves the shop. On site, you’ll lead the crew, manage the overall production, solve problems, and often work in a hands-on technical role.

Your specialty may be lighting, but your responsibility is the whole production. Our Production Managers work across audio, video, scenic, staging, rigging, power, and logistics. You don’t need to be an expert in every discipline, but you need to understand the plan, spot problems, and know when to bring in deeper expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Review sold scope, venue information, schedules, client expectations, and technical requirements.

  • Turn that information into a practical production plan for the shop and field crew.

  • Coordinate lighting, audio, video, scenic, staging, rigging, power, and venue infrastructure.

  • Account for equipment, labor, subrentals, transportation, and technical requirements.

  • Identify gaps, conflicts, and unanswered questions before they become show-day problems.

  • Coordinate with technicians and specialists when a production requires expertise beyond your own.

  • Communicate scope, labor, equipment, or cost concerns before additional commitments are made.

  • Make sure assigned events are prepared and show-ready before leaving the shop.

Production Planning

Depending on the size and complexity of the event, production documentation may include:

  • Floorplans, technical layouts and Lighting plots

  • Audio system and input requirements

  • Video displays, playback, switching, and signal requirements

  • Scenic and staging layouts

  • Rigging requirements

  • Power and distribution plans

  • Equipment and subrental orders

  • Labor schedules and crew assignments

  • Shop prep and pull notes

  • Load-in and load-out plans

  • Venue information and run-of-show notes

Crew Leadership

  • Lead crews through load-in, setup, rehearsal, show, strike, and load-out.

  • Set clear assignments, priorities, and expectations.

  • Keep departments coordinated and adjust priorities as conditions change.

  • Step into technical problems when needed while allowing assigned technicians to own their work.

  • Communicate developing problems early.

  • Work professionally with clients, venues, vendors, artists, and production partners.

  • Help develop less-experienced technicians through clear direction and hands-on guidance.

Lighting Specialty

This position is intended for someone whose strongest technical discipline is lighting.

You should be comfortable with:

  • Conventional, LED, and moving-light fixtures

  • Hanging, cabling, addressing, patching, focusing, and troubleshooting

  • DMX and network-based lighting systems

  • Lighting consoles and programming

  • Fixture modes, universes, and system configuration

  • Lighting power and distribution

  • Reading and creating lighting plots

  • Troubleshooting systems under show conditions

  • Practical lighting decisions involving color, focus, position, movement, and composition

  • ChamSys QuickQ / MagicQ and Vectorworks experience are a plus.

Working Knowledge Across Production

Production Managers are expected to work confidently across disciplines outside their specialty.

  • Audio: PA systems, microphones, signal flow, stage inputs, patching, and cabling

  • Video: Displays, projection, LED walls, playback, switching, and signal distribution

  • Scenic and Staging: Stages, risers, drape, scenic placement, sightlines, and installation needs

Department Responsibilities

  • Report damaged or unreliable equipment promptly.

  • Identify recurring equipment and workflow problems.

  • Support good prep, cabling, labeling, programming, and documentation standards.

  • Help evaluate equipment, repairs, replacements, and future purchases when appropriate.

  • Share technical knowledge with the production team.

  • Participate in post-event reviews and help improve future productions.

  • Warehouse and inventory management are not the primary responsibility of this position, but close coordination with the warehouse team is expected.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with meaningful live-event production experience, strong lighting skills, and the ability to think beyond one technical department.

A strong candidate will:

  • Have professional experience in live-event production and lighting.

  • Be able to turn a sold event into a realistic technical plan.

  • Understand how production departments affect one another.

  • Have experience leading crews and coordinating technicians.

  • Work collaboratively across disciplines outside their primary specialty.

  • Recognize problems early and ask questions when something does not make sense.

  • Communicate clearly with crew, clients, vendors, and management.

  • Manage multiple productions and deadlines.

  • Troubleshoot calmly under pressure.

  • Know when to solve a problem independently and when to involve another specialist.

  • Take responsibility for the success of the overall production.

Schedule and Work Environment

The live-event schedule regularly includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays. Local travel to event sites is required.

This is an active, hands-on position involving prolonged standing, bending, climbing, pushing equipment cases, working from ladders or lifts when appropriately trained, and lifting or carrying production equipment. • Vacation/PTO

  • Paid sick leave in accordance with company policy and applicable law
